Mexico Touring 2023

Introduction

Hello and thank for visiting my website about my bike tour in Mexico – Baja California Súr.

It has been more than six years since my bike tour in Europe and I thought it’s perhaps time to go for another bike tour before I get too old and too lazy.

I took an airplane to Loreto on the east side of Baja California. I’ve been on a vacation in Loreto a long long time ago and I remembered it as a very nice place. I brought my bicycle, racks, panniers and all the other necessary equipment in two big bags on the airplane with me. I originally planned to spend three days in Loretto, build up my bike, relax a little bit and get going. But Loretto is so nice that I decided to stay an additional night for a total of four days. I really enjoyed the fine dining, nice evening walks and beautiful views of the neighboring islands. There was a day when a cruise ship anchored outside of Loretto and the town filled up with people for the middle part of the day. Besides this, it was very calm and peaceful for the duration of my stay.

My original plan was to bike up north to Santa Rosalia, cut across to the west, go to San Ignacio Bay and then head down on the west side of Baja California all the way to the south end and then come back up to Loretto on the east side. However, as I am learning more about the quality of the roads on the west side of Baja California, I am slowly starting to adjust my plans. I will provide updates on this later.

I asked my hotel if I could leave my bags with them while I am out on the tour and they agreed. I really appreciate it. I budgeted about six weeks for the tour. My simple calculation was that it’s about 1000 miles and I would bike every other day about 50 miles so that makes it about 40 days. However, I am very flexible with these plans and my main goal is to have fun and enjoy all the beautiful places I may visit.

I plan to add a detailed description of every stage, it may include pictures, videos and Strava maps.

Out and back route, approximately 715 miles, 1144 km
